Bastian Schweinsteiger has been sold to Manchester United, Bayern Munich chairman Karl Heinz-Ruminegge announced on Saturday:

The midfielder found himself slightly lower down the Bayern Munich pecking order last season due to injury and the arrival of Xabi Alonso, making just 21 starts.

Even so, the German managed to score five goals and make eight assists in all competitions.

Schweinsteiger is known for his metronomic passing in midfield, as demonstrated by WhoScored.com:

Further, Schweinsteiger's work rate is practically second to none, and he runs tirelessly in midfield to close down opposition players, as illustrated by Squawka Dave:

Schweinsteiger has won 17 tackles in the opponents half during the last 3 seasons in the #UCL. Only Alves (29) and Vidal (19) have won more.

With the midfielder turning 31 on August 1, Bleacher Report's own Bundesliga expert, Clark Whitney, admitted the details of the reported deal are surprising:

However, the Red Devils have plenty of funds to spare, and in Schweinsteiger they acquire a player of huge quality.

The midfielder is as experienced as they come, having dominated central midfield for Bayern Munich and Germany for the last decade.

Though the likes of Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind are all talented players, Schweinsteiger is certainly a cut above quality-wise, and United could still get two or three good years from the German.

Schweinsteiger's arrival adds the genuine touch of class United have lacked in central midfield since Paul Scholes retired.
