The 2021 BRIT Awards proved to be a spectacular night, celebrating the best of British music from the past year.
Dua Lipa was one of this year’s big winners, as she picked up two awards for British Female and British Album for her critically-acclaimed effort “Future Nostalgia”.
Little Mix made BRIT Award history as the first ever all-female group to win in the British Group category, beating out the likes of The 1975, Bicep, Biffy Clyro and Young T & Bugsey. During their speech, they also dedicated their gong to previous British girl groups who missed out on the award, such as Spice Girls, Girls Aloud and Sugababes.
Taylor Swift was presented with the Global Icon award, becoming the first non-Brit to receive it. She has been highlighted for her massive success over the years as a singer and songwriter, as well as her UK chart achievements, which include seven number one albums.
Harry Styles was the recipient of the Best British Single award for his track “Watermelon Sugar”, which became a top 10 hit across the globe, even reaching number one in the US.
Meanwhile, rapper J Hus was awarded British Male, while rising indie folk singer Arlo Parks won British Breakthrough.
Alongside the awards were a series of fantastic performances. Coldplay opened the show with a mesmerising performance of their single “Higher Power” on top of the O2 Arena and Dua Lipa delighted with a “Future Nostalgia” album medley.
Disney star Olivia Rodrigo gave a stunning rendition of her UK number one hit “Drivers Licence”, while Years & Years singer Olly Alexander and Elton John teamed up to cover the Pet Shops Boys’ “It’s a Sin”, with proceeds from the charity single going towards the Elton John AIDS foundation.
This year’s BRIT Awards were held with a limited live audience of 4,000 key workers, as part of a test by the UK government to trial crowds with no masks or social distancing.
Each member of the audience was tested for COVID-19 before the show, and did not have to wear a mask or social distance once indoors.
